The iPhone may arrive on T-Mobile USA in 2010
T-Mobile is the nation’s fourth-largest wireless carrier that reported 33.4 million users in the third quarter and $17 billion in annual revenue. It would have also eclipsed Verizon Wireless’ 89 million subscribers reported in the third quarter.
Rather than Verizon Wireless, Apple’s iPhone will expand to T-Mobile’s US network when the AT&T exclusivity expires the next year, an analyst says.
Analysts, users, and media think an Apple-Verizon partnership would be a match made in heaven, especially considering a recent consumer survey that painted the AT&T service the worst among the nation’s largest US carriers. While some keep their fingers crossed for a dual-carrier iPhone sporting a hybrid Qualcomm chip that could theoretically support both Verizon’s CDMA/EVDO and AT&T’s/T-Mobile’s 3G network, industry watchers argue that Apple likes to keep things simple.
Unlike most pundits and analysts that are expecting the iPhone on the Verizon network in 2010, a Thomas Weisel analyst Doug Reid believes that the handset will hit T-Mobile’s US network instead. T-Mobile would achieve this for Apple in the US.
Apple already has a working iPhone arrangements in place with T-Mobile in a number of European territories, including Germany, the home to T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom. T-Mobile is the world’s third-largest wireless carrier with more than 350 million subscribers globally. T-Mobile said its UK unit will merge with Orange UK so that a new business entity has a better leverage in negotiations with Apple over the iPhone.
